how many watermelons grow from one seed and what is a good fertilizer instead of manure?
A single watermelon seed will put out several vines. The male flowers will form near the center of the plant. The female flowers will form on the vines. Don’t pinch off the male flowers as you may need them to start over if one of your melons dies.
After the female flowers pollinate, they will show a swelling at the base of the flower. Wait a week or so before thinning. Sometimes the freshly pollinated flower will turn yellow and die.
When you have a melon per vine a week old, start thinning any new melons off the vine. This insures big juicy melons. If you leave all the melons on the vines, they will be small and sometimes deformed.
Melons are heavy nitrogen feeders. Use a well balanced fertilizer like Bone Meal. The calcium in Bone Meal will prevent rot and scarring around the end of the melon.
Water you melon heavily, then get the water off. Standing water will rot the vines roots. Sandy soil is best for this as it drains away excess water.
